How to get services in California
Most long-term supports are paid for by Medicaid, often through a waiver program. Start with Medicaid, then get on the program that fits. Many programs have a waiting list, so apply early.

Apply online (opens in a new tab) · Call (800) 541-5555 · Your county social services office
Yes. California gives Medi-Cal automatically to people who get SSI.
Medi-Cal covers people who are aged, blind or disabled. People with a developmental disability can also get Medi-Cal through regional center waiver programs. Ask your county office about share of cost Medi-Cal if your income is over the limit.
For children: None. We did not find a TEFRA or Katie Beckett option. Ask your regional center about Medi-Cal through the HCBS Waiver for Californians with Developmental Disabilities.
If you work: 250% Working Disabled Program (250% WDP). Medi-Cal for working people with disabilities with family income under 250% of poverty. Premiums are $0 since July 2022. Apply through your county office.
